Day By Day Itinerary

Day 1 / Tuesday 16 July: Adelaide to Broken Hill (D)
Passengers will be transferred from home to the Adelaide Central Bus Station by car to join the tour. Our tour departs at 8.00 am and we travel through South Australia’s mid north to Burra. Burra was founded in 1845 following an amazing rich, copper discovery. The attractive town has many beautiful stone homes and buildings, which were built by the Cornish settlers many of whom were stone masons who came to the area following the discovery of the rich copper fields. Later, we enjoy a short sightseeing tour of the town which includes the original miners’ quarters in an area called Paxton Square. We also view the Red Ruth Goal, which was depicted in the movie, Breaker Morant which was filmed here. We continue to Yunta on the Barrier Highway and pass a number of deserted little towns which once served as watering stations for the steam trains from Broken Hill. On arrival we check into our accommodation for our 2-night stay.
2 nights: Broken Hill
Day 2 / Wednesday 17 July: Broken Hill Experience (BD)
Today after breakfast, we begin a memorable ‘Silver City’ experience. Broken Hill is one of the most iconic cities in our history and is the birthplace of Australia’s largest company, BHP, which was founded due to a mining discovery in 1868. Highlights of our tour today include a visit to the Line of Lode Miners Memorial, Mad Max Museum and Pro Hart Art Gallery. We also visit Silverton, now a ghost town, and is used as a location for many Australian feature movies. A popular highlight will be a visit to Bell’s Milk Bar a step back in time to the 1950s! This is the perfect place to enjoy a malted milkshake, a nut sundae or mint julep. Here’s an opportunity to play a tune from the jukebox. Later today we enjoy more sightseeing in Broken Hill including the interesting White’s Mineral Art and Mining Museum. Here you will gain an insight into the miners’ lives and working conditions in the famous Broken Hill underground mines. Tonight, after dinner enjoy a little time at the original Palace Hotel transformed and made famous by the movie Priscilla, Queen of the Desert which was filmed here.
Day 3 / Thursday 18 July: Broken Hill to Peterborough (BD)
This morning after breakfast our journey takes us via the Barrier Ranges through Coburn and onto Peterborough. Peterborough sits on the intersection of the east west railway linking Port Pirie & Broken Hill and the north south railway linking Adelaide to Alice Springs. The town has played an important role in the operation of South Australia’s railway system. Peterborough was the hometown for Bob the railway dog who is remembered by a bronze statue in the main street. Bob is featured in a story with railway travellers he met throughout his life. After dinner tonight we experience an outstanding and entertaining steam and light show. During this show the history of the steam train is brought back to life and provides plenty of enjoyment.
1 night: Peterborough
Day 4 / Friday 19 July: Sights, Sounds and the food of the Flinders. Prairie Hotel Parachilna & Hawker Gallery (BD)
This morning we travel North on the Flinders Ranges Way. After morning tea, we continue taking in views from the lookouts and enjoy sightseeing before travelling via Parachilna. Here, at the iconic Prairie Hotel we sit down to an amazing lunch world famous for its local produce and locally native plants. After lunch, we travel to Hawker which was founded in 1880 and began as an important railway town. While in Hawker we visit the popular Jeff Morgan Gallery. We view a magnificent panorama made up of a series of paintings depicting the beauty of the entire ranges and is the artist’s tribute to the beauty of the area. The gallery also features local art and vintage cars. We continue to our accommodation.
1 night: Port Augusta
Day 5 / Saturday 20 July: Pichi Richi Train and Adelaide (B)
After breakfast this morning we board the Afghan Express to travel on the iconic Pichi Richi train track. The railway originally began running the service between Port Augusta and Farina, now an abandoned town situated in the North Flinders Ranges. The track was eventually extended to become the first railway service to Alice Springs. Our journey departs Port Augusta at 10.30 am and travels through gum lined creeks, hills, and ancient rocky outcrops in the same relaxed speed as in time gone by. The train arrives at Quorn Station at 12.15 pm and later we travel back to Adelaide via Laura and Clare arriving around 5.00 pm. Adelaide travellers will be met on arrival at the Adelaide Central Bus Station and transferred home by car.
